Pyrography
Pyrography also known as pokerwork is the art of burning a picture or design into wood ,leather, cork, paper and many other materials.Pyrography has been around for hundreds of years but it was the victorians that made it popular. The tools for pyro used to be heated in a fire but now are mostly low powerd electricly heated wire or solid tip pens with a veriable heat control unit .This gives the artist the chance to control light and dark marks and very fine shading .
Wood is the most popular material for burning, sycamore being one of the best because of its very light colour and very smooth grain. For framed pictures birch plywood is also very good but almost any wood can be used in some way and its always good to experiment. Most of my work is now burnt using a Peter Child hot wire machine which I think is the best on the market but I do have a Janik G4 solid point which is used now and then.
